Ask Me Anything (new feature!)I’m going to be recording short video answers to questions that you guys ask.

Just ask whatever questions you have in this Google doc (open to be edited by anyone with the link, so please keep it shared only here) and once a week I’ll answer a few of them:

upwork – This is the new version of odesk + elance once they merged. I’ve used this platform to hire editors, designers, etc. You can get very good work done very cheaply if you are very clear with your instructions, goals, and end state. Highly recommend for one off projects.

fiverr – Basically, pay $5 (plus tax) for thousands of different micro tasks. I don’t recommend for bigger projects or complex tasks. Use for basic copy editing or proofreading (spelling / grammar), but I wouldn’t recommend for developmental editing.

Tools and Software

A list of tools and software to help you on your publishing journey.

Brainstorming / Outlining / Wireframing

Trello – a free project management board that is incredible for outlining / wireframing your book (and for coordinating book launches).

Evernote – free “memory” software that lets you take notes on anything, anywhere, on just about any device. I love this for keeping track of book ideas, outlining chapters, or breaking chapters into individual notes and writing a whole book (can get tricky, but I’ve seen it done).

Scrivener – advanced writing software that is regarded as much better for professional writers than Word or alternative writing programs. Outlining and wireframing your book in Scrivener is easy as pie (tutorials coming soon).

Writing

Scrivener – A popular choice among bloggers and book writers. Scrivener includes advanced chapter structure features, allows for easy movement to all your content, the ability to organize notes, and more.

Word – Simple and still works.

Google Docs – I wrote Collaborate using Google Docs. A good program for collaborative product development.

Cover Design

99 Designs – Get a 30+ professional artists to compete for your business for as little as $300.

upwork – This is the new version of odesk + elance once they merged. You can find professional designers on here from a few dollars an hour to thousands per project. Depends what you need.

fiverr – I wouldn’t recommend Fiverr for complex images or if you need something original. If you know exactly what you need designed, it’s a great place to get it created.

Canva – DIY solution. Canva is free and comes with very nice book templates premade – just add your own images (or pay for theirs).

Email Marketing

Convertkit – My new favorite Email Marketing Service. Convertkit is built for authors and bloggers and makes building an author-focused email list a breaze (and customer service is top notch).

Mailchimp – Free EMS (email marketing service) up to 2,000 subscribers.

Contactually – A comprehensive CRM (customer relationship manager) that you can create sophisticated, automated sales funnels with. I use Contactually to automate many of the setup emails when people enter Publishers’ Empire. Ridiculously powerful once you get the hang of it.

Aweber – Similar to Mailchimp but starts at $20 / month.

Infusionsoft – like Convertkit but on steroids and mostly for enterprise level email marketing (i.e. you have a list of 20,000+)

Author / Publisher Website

Newrainmaker – All in one solution: web hosting, web design, ecommerce solution, content management system, podcast platform, unlimited disk usage, incredibly fast load times, etc. I run Tommorkes.com and Publishers Empire through this platform. Highly recommend.

Optimizepress – Build completely customizable sales pages from scratch (or from templates – many included).

Themeforest.com – Buy premium, beautiful looking wordpress / website templates for about $50 (I recommend this for new authors who are just starting out online).

eCommerce / Selling

Gumroad – Sell directly to your audience.

Amazon – The biggest retail search engine in the world and a massive platform for authors. Amazon generates $5.25 billion in revenue from book sales and owns 65% share of the ebook sales market (which itself is 30% of all book sales).

Content Delivery

Leadpages – Leadpages Leadbox feature let’s you send digital products (like the first few chapters of your book, for example) to readers after they opt in with their email address. This feature alone has increased my email list size by over 2,000 readers in the past year.

Gumroad – Sell directly to your audience. By using Gumroad’s Pay What You Want feature, you can turn this into a content delivery tool as well (you don’t get charged if your readers choose to contribute nothing).

Automation

Zapier – Zapier connects software products to one another so you can automate just about anything you want. Just about every piece of software listed on this page can be connected to one another through Zapier, which makes it only as powerful as your creativity.

Web Hosting

Webfaction – relatively inexpensive website hosting for more advanced users (or those with multiple websites)

Bluehost – super cheap website hosting, great for beginners.

Newrainmaker – All in one solution: web hosting, web design, ecommerce solution, content management system, podcast platform, unlimited disk usage, incredibly fast load times, etc. I run Tommorkes.com and Publishers Empire through this platform. Highly recommend.

Book Sales Pages

Leadpages – Set up sales pages, book sales pages, early notification optin pages, ambassador optin pages, preorder pages, etc. in minutes.
